A Simple Look at a Not-So-Simple Life

When I Grow Up

“When I grow up I want to be an engineer.”

Those words actually came out of my 4-year-old son’s mouth – several times over the last couple of days, as a matter of fact. I’ve been impressed! An engineer, huh? Maybe I won’t have to worry about money in my old age after all. Then again, what on earth does a 4-year-old know about engineers and what is so exciting about what he knows that he’s decided to replace his dreams of being a fireman, Spiderman, a policeman, or a football player?

The truth came out this morning as he was getting dressed. “I want to wear my engineer underwear.”

What??? He got some new underwear over the weekend, but I certainly was unaware that any of it was engineer underwear.

“Show me what you are talking about, son.”

He looked through the stack of newly laundered underwear and pulled out the pair he was looking for: Ninja Turtle underwear.

He doesn’t want to be an engineer! He wants to be a Ninja!

Will that pay as well, I wonder?!

Probably not, but it’s at least worth dreaming over. PPB
