I’ve been going to Montreat at least once – usually more – every year for ten years. Every year I read the warnings about not feeding the bears. Every year I struggle with the “bear-proof” trash cans on the main campus. Every year I’ve kept my eyes peeled for a black bear. Every year I’ve gone home disappointed – no bear sightings.
Until this year.
This year we were entertained by a young bear on several occasions. He’s about two years old and apparently has recently been emancipated by his mama. I heard on the radio that a newly emancipated male bear acts a lot like how a 16-year-old boy with no restrictions might act. This one seems to like the territory around the South Carolina Home, which is where we were staying.
Anna snapped this picture with her cell phone from our apartment doorway. She thought he was awfully cute, but was intimidated by his lack of shyness and his snort!
